Buy in – this is the amount that a player must pay in order to get back after being eliminated from the game.

Discard pile – the stack of cards that were discarded by the players and are face-up.

Initial meld – the first lay down of a player. There’s a minimum required number of points which the player’s sets and/or runs must be equal to in order to perform an initial meld, in most cases it’s 40 points.

Initial stake – the amount added to the pool by all players at the beginning of the game.

Joker – a card that can take on the value of any of the other cards in the game.

Kalooki – The popular game of Kalooki, which is a variant of Rummy. Also known as Kalookie, Kaluki, Kaloochi, Caloochi, Kalougi, and Kalogghi. This is also what a player calls when he melds all his cards in one turn. It’s also the amount paid to the player who wins the game by melding all his cards in one lay down (one turn).

Kalooki variations – there are many variations for Kalooki such as: European Kalookie, North American Kalooki, Jamaican Kalooki, South African Kaluki, and Swedish Kalooki.

Meld – laying down a set or a run on the table.

Run – 3 or more consecutive cards with the same suit.

Set – 3-4 cards of the same rank and of different suits (no repetitions of suits).

Stock – the stack of cards that are shuffled and unknown to the players.
